The Importance Of Blood Sugar Maintenance

In Weight Loss

The most effective way to maintain your body’s capacity for burning fat is by regulating your blood sugar level. Keeping the level as consistent as possible helps to maintain the efficiency of your metabolism, and in turn, keeps your body from storing unnecessary fat. There are several ways in which you can regulate your blood sugar level, and keep your body healthier in general.

When you ingest food, your body works to convert carbohydrates into blood sugar, which is also known as glucose. This glucose is your body’s main energy source. How hungry you are, and how much energy you have can be affected by your blood sugar level, and it also regulates how much fat is burned, and how much is stored.

When carbohydrates are processed and converted to blood sugar, the pancreas produces insulin, which is a hormone that transports blood sugar into the cells of your body. This is where it is used up as energy. The processing of sugar, refined foods and other foods that contain a lot of carbohydrates into blood sugar is very quick, which results in the pancreas having to overwork to produce enough insulin to transport all of that blood sugar to the cells.

When there is a surge like this, in insulin production, our body realizes that there is more than enough energy available instantly, and it therefore stops burning fat, and starts storing it instead. Of course, this leads to weight gain. However, the other problem with this overproduction of insulin is the cycle that is created by it.

Because of the surge in insulin, too much blood sugar is removed from the blood and transported to the cells, and the effect of this is a drastic drop in both blood sugar and insulin levels, which makes you feel hungry and tired, and usually craving something with high sugar and carbohydrate content, which of course, continues the vicious circle.

Contrary to what many people believe, skipping a meal or dieting does not help weight loss, in fact, it has the opposite effect because it causes the metabolism to slow down in order to conserve energy. It is much more effective to eat frequently in order to provide consistent energy, as long as what you are eating is healthy.

Cutting down on processed foods, refined foods and sugar will help to improve the balance of blood sugar, and the health of your metabolism. Choosing high fiber meals and snacks will assist in regulating your blood sugar level, as well as helping to slow down your digestion rate and the absorption of glucose. For example, eating an orange will be better for your metabolism than drinking orange juice.

Keeping healthy snacks with you when you are away from home will help to avoid getting too hungry, since getting very hungry can lead to unhealthy snacking, and a slowing down of your metabolism. It is worth preparing healthy snacks and meals in advance.
